Jagiellonian Law Society members return from successful trip to Poland
At the end of April, members of the Jagiellonian Law Society returned from their legal, educational and diplomatic mission to Poland. Highlights of the trip included meetings with Justice Katarzyna Gonera of the Polish Supreme Court, meetings with the President of the Constitutional Tribunal, and participation in a conference at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) on European and American responses to terrorism after September 11. At this conference, members Dave Narkiewicz and Chuck Szymanski spoke on balancing civil rights with security concerns.
In addition, members of the Society were given VIP status at a speech they attended which was given by former Polish President Lech Walesa. After the speech, Society president Chuck Szymanski had a short meeting with President Walesa.
Members of the Society also attended a reception held in their honor hosted by the Vice-mayor of Lublin and KUL. This was a wonderful event where members were able to talk and socialize with a number of professors and law students at KUL.
The entire trip was a great success, and helped strengthen the ties between the Society and KUL's Center for American Law. Several future projects were discussed, and the Society will probably repeat this trip in another two years. Much thanks goes out to Dr. Tomasz Sieniow and Prof. Delaine Swenson from KUL for helping to make this trip possible.
